When a Plan Comes Together

August 10, 2017

Dear Partners and Friends,

The Saratoga Select Sale was likely our best ever.

Our plan coming into the sale was to vet all of the classic distance colts but to also focus on fillies. Our hope this year for DDX was to buy about three fillies and we have now done that. Fillies by Malibu Moon, Bernardini and Ghostzapper. We are plenty excited about all three.

Because we have now acquired three fillies, our total focus at Keeneland September can be on colts which means we will only have to look at half as many horses.

We haven't exactly ignored colts to this point. We are very pleased with the Street Boss colt we got in July and last night we picked up a Distorted Humor that several of our team considered one of the absolute best horses in the sale. Here are the specifics:

Hip 1 (Filly): By Bernardini o/o Madame Thor by Deputy Minister

On the first night of the sale we struck early buying Hip 1 for $175,000. This filly wowed our inspection team and we thought she would bring around $280,000. Out of a Deputy Minister mare, the filly will easily get classic distances and is pure dirt. She scored high on every single one of our tests. Hip 168 (Filly): By Ghostzapper o/o Coppermine  by Unbridled's Song This filly is a knockout! Conor Crawford (even tighter with the dollars than his father) thought we should go to $350,000 on this filly knowing she would have substantial residual value as a broodmare. So when we gaveled her home for $200,000 you can imagine how excited we were.
Bullseye cardio. Loved by Dr. Steven Allday (extraordinary sales vet). Classic distance breeding. A top pick from the Elloree Field General, Frank Smith :). What else could we ask?

Hip 143 (Colt): By Distorted Humor o/o Bonnie Blue Flag by Mineshaft

This fella has every right to be a star. He is a little long in the pasterns and we used that to our advantage price-wise, buying him for $320,000. Listen to this:  Best cardio in sale. Top ranked colt by Dr. Allday. 3 STAR selection by Werk Thoroughbreds. Dr. Allday (Todd Pletcher's Vet) said the patterns will be fine and this colt has every attribute to make classic distance noise.

I wish we had a barn full just like him!

This weekend we will be working the New York Bred Sale and then in September it is on to Keeneland. Come join us! We had a big group at this sale and a good time was had by all.
