"Donegal Racing makes a habit of getting runners to the Derby"
Overflow Field to Test Blue Grass
Excerpt from Blood-Horse, Lenny Shulman
An overflow roster of hopefuls looking for a last chance to Run for the Roses—as well as cash in on the $1 million purse—were drawn for the April 9 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I).
Only two of the 14 horses that were drawn for the 1 1/8-mile race—which carries a full bounty of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) qualifying points—own last-out wins, underlining the need for form reversals to be Derby bound in four weeks.
Pletcher also sends out Donegal Moon, one of the last-out winners—albeit in first-level allowance company. Donegal Racing makes a habit of getting its runners to the Derby, so it would not be a surprise to see this Malibu Moon colt grab a slice of the 100-40-20-10 Derby-credit allotment.
