Pick Six!

September 17, 2016

Dear Partners and Friends,

First, congratulations to Vulcan's Forge on his big win yesterday at Belmont. Forge had to survive a lousy pace but you could tell in early stretch he had them measured. Forge wants to go long on dirt which is why we bought him. Lifetime best Beyer for Forge at (approx. 93).

Today Patrick's Day faces a salty field at Churchill Downs.

Now, to the sale!

The pick six has been good to Donegal Nation this year and the sale is no exception as we now have six yearling colts in the Donegal barn. We have managed to avoid the minefields down here (people paying $500,000 for horses with fundamental vetting issues and/or unable to get a classic distance). God bless them!

So today we added two new prospects.

Hip 742 became the fifth Donegal acquisition when we landed this Tiznow colt out of Cure the Blues by A.P. Indy. At $100,000 he is a stunningly good buy.

This Tiznow has the added benefit of being a New York Bred which provides us an outstanding backup plan for him should one be needed. Tom Morley was seen whispering in his ear on the way out of the sales ring.

A short time later we acquired Hip #812 by Uncle Mo out of a Bernardini mare. This colt was a Todd Pletcher favorite so you can likely guess who he will be trained by. This Uncle Mo, believe it or not, is an Oklahoma bred. Byron rated his cardio as best he has seen at the sale and he is just a neat package of a racehorse. I have a funny feeling this lad will become a Donegal favorite when you all meet him. We spent $150,000 on this colt and were prepared to go quite a bit higher.

Speaking of prices (and I give son Conor a lot of credit in this category) we have been disciplined to the max in controlling our spending. Last year through the first six horses we had spent $1,210,000. This year through the first six it is $1,250,000.

Having now bragged about our fiscal discipline fasten your seat belts today because we could go yard on a couple of colts being offered.

Have a great Saturday following your favorite teams (sorry Sparty) and we will be back with what might be a major report tomorrow!

Jerry
