Serious Problem for Donegal
Dear Partners and Friends,
As things currently stand, Rock Shandy and Finnegan's Wake will both be racing at Santa Anita on February 7. That is the same day Keen Ice may run in the Withers in New York. What is a Donegal Nation person supposed to do?
Okay, so maybe "designer" problem would have been a better title than "serious" problem ;).
You all know Rock Shandy ran a great race on Saturday, finishing second and earning four Derby Points. Rock earned an 89 Beyer in the race. He had all the worst of it pinned on the rail. Here is the key thing to know about our horse vs. the winner, both of whom are nice colts: The winner is sired by In Summation. Average winning distance for his progeny is 5.92 furlongs. Rock Shandy is bred to go 10 to 12 furlongs.
As we move forward with all of our contenders on the Derby trail, we will constantly be facing horses bred to be better than us at these shorter distances even though they have ZERO chance to win at the Derby distance. Therein lies the challenge in getting enough points to go to the dance.
How is Keen Ice doing? Check out this notice about his breeze yesterday.
We are working hard to lock down capable jockeys and staying in close touch with our trainers so we can firm up plans very soon. I think it is fair to say we will have good Donegal support come February 7 on both coasts.
